Jimena Alviar, MFA

" I am Colombian and I recognize myself as a Latina of a mixed ethnicity. I create movement using the body I have, a body full of curves. I use those curves and my own sense of rhythm as starting points for movement. My life experiences make me empathetic with other women, and my work transforms my lived experiences to create movement statements. I dance what I know and what I have experienced. I move, breath, dance, speak and choreograph from a woman’s perspective.

I love working in collaboration with other artists, keeping dance as the nucleus of the work. As a dancer and a choreographer, I am interested in the exploration of a physicality mixed with emotions. This blend of flesh and emotions allows me to create a true and coherent way of communicating the inner of a woman’s body, mind, and imagination. I am also interested in how our inner lives are influenced and altered by the rational thinking process. That is why I challenge myself not to be about emotions only but to bring my analytical skills to processes of movement and creativity.

I see light as another interacting body. It is always present, and needs to be perceived either by the conscious or the subconscious mind in order to complete the message and experience of a dance. I tend to create a dance while feeling the light that coexists in the same space/time moment.

For me, dance is a way to know myself and to start understanding the worlds of other people. To be a dance performer is to be able to express feelings, sensations, situations, and thoughts through my body in such a way that the audience can experience them at the same time."
